Carl Richter - Senior Pastor

The Rev. Carl RichterOur new Senior Pastor, The Rev. Carl Richter, grew up in western New York in the village of Fredonia. His family owned a grape farm that is now part of Liberty Vineyards and Winery, operated by his first cousin. His father was a Fredonia police officer, his mother was a homemaker and a freelance pianist.

Carl holds a NYS Regents diploma from Fredonia Central High School – where he lettered in swimming, played bass in the orchestra, and sang in the mixed chorus and prestigious Fredonia Madrigal Singers.

Rev. Carl received the Bachelor of Music in Education degree from the Fredonia School of Music, SUNY at Fredonia where he majored in voice. He sang with the Fredonia College Choir, the Festival Chorus, and the Fredonia Chamber Singers. He sang the tenor lead in the Hillman Opera production of Smetena’s “The Bartered Bride.”

After 10 years teaching public school music in Dunkirk, NY and Northampton, MA, Carl entered Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York. He was admitted to the degree of Master of Divinity at Union in 1994. He received a certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education from the Anna M. Fulling Chaplaincy Program at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, CT in 1993.

Rev. Richter has served churches in Holyoke, MA, Pittsburgh, PA, and Lorain, OH before arriving at the United Church of Christ, Congregational in Webster. He and his wife, Marty (Martha Snyder), a graduate of Colgate University and a commercial loan officer at Lorain National Bank, are the proud parents of two children, Katie – a graduate of Allegheny College and an account executive with SingleSource Properties; and Billy – a junior at Heidelberg University.

Rev. Carl Richter is excited to be a part of this incredible community of God’s people known as the United Church of Christ, Congregational in Webster, and is happy to be back in western New York!
